Recruitment for Volunteer Position: Media Researcher
Suaka is a voluntary civil society network of organizational and individual members working for refugee rights protection in Indonesia. Suaka seeks a committed volunteer Media Researcher to work independently (approx 3-5 hours per week) to collect and collate relevant news coverage information on asylum seeker and refugee issues, presented in a weekly summary to the SUAKA secretariat. The Media Researcher will report to the SUAKA Chairperson for an 8-month position commencing April 2014. Qualifications:
- A strong interest in the humanitarian and human rights protection of asylum seekers and refugees
- Fluent in both English and Indonesian written languages
- Experience in developing research strategies and the use of a database (training on SUAKA database will be provided)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience in administration work and team work; good skills in public relations and having a wide network with media/journalists would be an advantage although not important, as long as they have a passion for human rights issues, community development and community service
Tasks:
- Monitor reports on asylum seeker or refugee issues in Indonesia (print and online; TV/radio would be useful) in national and international media and summarize developments and incidents in a short (1 page) weekly report submitted on a Friday to the Suaka Secretariat
- Develop and update a media database highlighting: a. incidents of human rights violation, interception, arrest, detention, boat sinking, “turn back” of boats to Indonesia, smuggling etc; noting the number of people affected and nationality b. statements by government officials, use of language by journalists (illegal migrants, refugees, asylum seekers etc.); and c. references to legal obligations or regulations
- Compile URL links of articles or releases into the database
- Be available for incidental clarification questions via email or phone (time to be agreed)
- If interested and time permits, participate in the SUAKA Public Awareness Working Group
